Thriving at Work: ADHD Strategies for South Asian Women

Navigating the workplace with ADHD presents unique challenges, especially for South Asian women who may feel pressure to be the 'model minority' employee – always organized, always on time, always exceeding expectations.

The truth is, your ADHD brain has incredible strengths. The key is creating an environment where those strengths can shine while minimizing the impact of executive function challenges.

Know Your Strengths

ADHD brains often excel at:

  • Creative problem-solving
  • Working under pressure (hello, deadline hyperfocus!)
  • Thinking outside the box
  • Passionate advocacy for projects they believe in

Practical Strategies

Time Management: Use visual timers, time-blocking techniques, and calendar apps with multiple reminders. Don't rely on 'remembering' – externalize everything.

Meeting Preparation: Request agendas in advance. Take notes or ask for meeting summaries. It's okay to process information differently.

Communication: If email overwhelms you, schedule specific times to check and respond. Consider asking colleagues for their preferred response timeline.

Requesting Accommodations

In many countries, ADHD qualifies for workplace accommodations. This might include flexible hours, work-from-home options, written instructions for complex tasks, or a quieter workspace. You don't have to disclose your diagnosis to request accommodations – focus on what you need to do your best work.

Remember: Asking for what you need isn't weakness. It's self-advocacy, and it's a skill worth developing.
